Here's another puzzle for you. I lost the answer years ago, and I go nuts trying to figure it out...?
Smith and Jones started off together to walk to a nearby town. Smith covered the first half-mile at one mile per hour faster than Jones. He covered the second half-mile at one mile per hour slower than Jones. Jones walked to town at a constant speed all the way. Did they arrive at the same time? And if they didn't, which one got there first?
No matter what his speed is, Jones will always arrive first. This is the reason: When Smith walks one half of the distance one mile slower than Jones, he loses more than he gains when he walks the other half of the distance one mile faster than Jones.
For example, let's say that Smith's "fast" speed is 3 miles per hour, Jones's constant speed is 2 miles per hour, and Smith's "slow" speed is 1 mile per hour. Smith will cover the first half-mile in 10 minutes. However, Jones will cover the whole distance in only 30 minutes. This is because when Smith is traveling fast for half a mile, Jones is traveling 2/3 as fast as he is, but when Smith is traveling slow for half a mile, he's only traveling 1/2 as fast as Jones is.
